Ron Dabney

Gerry Geddes
At the top of Oh Broadway, My Broadway, his new show at the Metropolitan Room, Ron Dabney promised that he was going to give us new takes on songs from the Great White Way. To be honest, the songs were not exclusively Broadway and the arrangements did not stray all that far from the traditional....

Lisa Yaeger

Gerry Geddes
At the Metropolitan Room, Lisa Yaeger's new show, Jersey Girl, is not only a tribute to her place of birth and current residence, but also a celebration of the musical legends that the state has given the world. It's a simple but effective premise, offering the singer a great variety of musical styles and genres...

Katie McGrath

Gerry Geddes
Sitting in the audience at the Metropolitan Room, viewing Katie McGrath's extraordinary new show, Significant Others, I was reminded of a friend's description of good musical theatre: the songs occur when mere speech is not enough to communicate the feelings and emotion of the character. McGrath presented herself as a smart, strong, witty, composed woman,...

Chris Harder

Gerry Geddes
Chris Harder wears many hats, most of which he will happily remove with the rest of his clothes in his role as burlesque performer/producer and porn star. He is also a writer, and he has created a series of wild and wacky take-offs of The Hardy Boys at the Laurie Beechman Theatre called Nasty Drew...

Antonia Bennett

Gerry Geddes
Antonia Bennett arrives on the stage of the venerable Café Carlyle having grown up around giants of the Great American Songbook, including Rosemary Clooney and Frank Sinatra, and having been the opening act for her legendary father, Tony, for over ten years. She has an obvious affection for the standards with which she has filled...

Those Girls

Gerry Geddes
With Those Girls, currently at the Laurie Beechman Theatre, four talented solo cabaret performers (Eve Eaton, Rachel Hanser, Karen Mack, and Wendy Russell) join forces and voices to apply their rich, exciting harmonies as a modern-day, "hair salon quartet" answer to the barbershop quartets of old. Even when each gets to lead, the other three...

Lady Bunny

Gerry Geddes
The immense, swirling, platinum wig atop her head is but one of the many things about Lady Bunny that are larger than life. She revels in them all in her show Trans-Jester!, currently enjoying a run at the historic Stonewall Inn. She is raunchy, tasteless, hilarious, fearless, political, angry, and knowing, while at the same...

D’Vorah Bailey

Gerry Geddes
D'Vorah Bailey is a charming, talented singer who shines on stage when she doesn't get in her own way. Unfortunately, that happens only part of the time in her heavily autobiographical cabaret show Wishful Thinking, which recently had a return engagement at the Metropolitan Room. If you attend New York cabaret at all, you have...

No Evil – A Cabaret of Resistance

Gerry Geddes
Politics and cabaret have been entwined since the beginning of the art form. Political and social commentary and criticism informed much of the early days of cabaret in Germany. In America, from the Depression and upheaval of the thirties and forties to the racial unrest and anti-war sentiment of the sixties, cabaret offered a soapbox...

Sally Schwab

Gerry Geddes
If you go to a cabaret show in 2017, there's a fifty-fifty chance that the concept will be "how I got to New York and what I did to get a job in show business." Sally Schwab of The Marvelous Wonderettes takes that contemporary cliché and runs with it in the riotously funny Adventures in...
