Penny Arcade

Susana Ventura grew up in Connecticut. At the age of 13 she ran away to Provincetown and quickly became the darling of the gay mecca, and a particular favorite of the "older queens" because she "took an interest" in them. The girl had no ulterior motive; she was legitimately curious and interested, and she soaked...

Anthony Wayne

Gerry Geddes
Anthony Wayne is a singular talent. He has a strong, yet insinuating, voice, and his supple movements reveal his dancer past to great effect, particularly in the limited space at the Metropolitan Room where he chose to celebrate his birthday on stage in The Evolution of Anthony Wayne. Most recently lauded for his work in...

Renee Katz

Gerry Geddes
Renee Katz's story is indeed remarkable. On June 7, 1979, a crazed person threw the 17 yr old flutist in front of an E train. She managed to survive by rolling off the track at the last minute, but her hand was severed. Doctors succeeded in reattaching the hand, and over time, with much media attention...

Luke Babylon, Christian Magician

Gerry Geddes
Luke Babylon, Christian Magician is the satiric/spiritual alter ego of out gay comic Zach Zimmerman, who recently left a career-on-the-rise in Chicago to move to New York City. At the Duplex a week or so ago, he made his Manhattan cabaret debut as a New Yorker with this zany show. I've followed him with interest...

Salty Brine

The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling, the album Nilsson Schmilsson by Harry Nilsson, and memories of time spent at a boys' camp in New Hampshire combine in the kaleidoscopic dreamscape called Welcome to the Jungle, currently on display at Pangea. This is the latest in a series called The Living Record Collection written and performed...

Ron Dabney

Gerry Geddes
At the top of Oh Broadway, My Broadway, his new show at the Metropolitan Room, Ron Dabney promised that he was going to give us new takes on songs from the Great White Way. To be honest, the songs were not exclusively Broadway and the arrangements did not stray all that far from the traditional....

Lisa Yaeger

Gerry Geddes
At the Metropolitan Room, Lisa Yaeger's new show, Jersey Girl, is not only a tribute to her place of birth and current residence, but also a celebration of the musical legends that the state has given the world. It's a simple but effective premise, offering the singer a great variety of musical styles and genres...

Katie McGrath

Gerry Geddes
Sitting in the audience at the Metropolitan Room, viewing Katie McGrath's extraordinary new show, Significant Others, I was reminded of a friend's description of good musical theatre: the songs occur when mere speech is not enough to communicate the feelings and emotion of the character. McGrath presented herself as a smart, strong, witty, composed woman,...

Chris Harder

Gerry Geddes
Chris Harder wears many hats, most of which he will happily remove with the rest of his clothes in his role as burlesque performer/producer and porn star. He is also a writer, and he has created a series of wild and wacky take-offs of The Hardy Boys at the Laurie Beechman Theatre called Nasty Drew...

Antonia Bennett

Gerry Geddes
Antonia Bennett arrives on the stage of the venerable Café Carlyle having grown up around giants of the Great American Songbook, including Rosemary Clooney and Frank Sinatra, and having been the opening act for her legendary father, Tony, for over ten years. She has an obvious affection for the standards with which she has filled...
