Sebastian Stert

Friday March 23, 7:00 pm

Berlin-based actor-singer Sebastian Stert in a program of the songs of Hildegard Knef, as recorded on his CD Zimmer bei Nacht (Room by Night). Knef was an award-winning actress who appeared in many films and plays in her native Germany, as well as internationally and in Hollywood. As Hildegarde Neff, she scored on Broadway starring as Ninotchka in the Cole Porter musical Silk Stockings. After she returned to Germany, she launched a very successful concert and recording career, releasing more than twenty albums, with many of the lyrics written by her and a number of the songs becoming jazz standards.

Stert, whose nom de jazz is Bax, has a baritone voice perfectly suited to the evocative late-night feel of the songs, whether they are wistful and reflective or hip and cool. This New York appearance features a few new English translations and a guest appearance by Bistro Award-winning vocalist Karen Kohler. He will be accompanied by John di Martino on piano and Yoshi Waki on bass.
