Sundays and Mondays, May 7 – 29; 7:00 pm
Karen’s show “Mason at Mama’s in March,” was such a hit in its original run and in its encore presentation, that she’s scheduled another run, this time in May. The evening features fresh arrangements of classics, new songs, and music she and her longtime composer/arranger Brian Lasser performed in the early days at Mama’s—and it is staged in the very room that she and Nancy LaMott opened in 1982. Directed by Barry Kleinbort, musical direction and accompaniment by Christopher Denny.
Karen Mason is equal parts artist and entertainer, actress and singer—and she’s radiant in all roles. This show is a triumph, an example of cabaret at its most glorious. It demonstrates not only why she is a star, but also why she is so beloved. In an evening filled with standout interpretations and performances, one selection manages to stand out especially, because in a single number it illustrates the many dimensions to her artistry: her portrayal of Norma Desmond singing “As If We Never Said Goodbye” from Sunset Boulevard. It truly does not get any better than this
